¿DÓNDE quedó la semilla? ¿Dónde el licuado de mamá, nuestras tardes en el jardín botánico del Bronx? ¿Y los sábados de acompañarnos en la fábrica? ¿Dónde la sonrisa del frijol en nuestro almuerzo? ¿Se acabaron nuestras siestas de la tarde? ¿Por qué huimos? ¿Y en qué momento me perdí?
¿Para qué los estudios, la literatura, si el dolor insiste? ¿Por qué la enfermedad, el grito en la madrugada, la muerte? ¿De quién es este ojo con el que leo que bombardearon una escuela primaria en Irán, niñas bajo los escombros, enterradas vivas?
Las niñas ya no preguntan.
¿Cuándo callarán las voces que engordan con el miedo en las pantallas, en los mítines, en la mesa de al lado? ¿Quién sostiene el aullido que nos deja rotas? ¿Por qué he vuelto a este mundo sucio? ¿De quién este cuerpo, esta noche infinita? ¿Quién nos vendió el sueño y nos vendó la esperanza? ¿Quiénes somos aquí? ¿Diosas masacradas? ¿No hay a dónde ir? ¿No era también la semilla un entierro que sabía volver? ¿Y la raíz?

WHERE did the seed go? Where is Mamá’s licuado, our afternoons at the Bronx Botanical Garden? And the Saturdays keeping each other company at the factory? Where is the smile of the bean in our lunch? Are our afternoon naps over? Why did we flee? And at what moment did I lose myself?
What good are studies, literature, if the pain insists? Why the illness, the scream in the small hours, the death? Whose is this eye I read with, that they bombed an elementary school in Iran, girls under the rubble, buried alive?
The girls no longer ask.
When will they fall silent, the voices that grow fat on fear, on the screens, at the rallies, at the next table over? Who holds the howl that leaves us broken? Why have I returned to this dirty world? Whose is this body, this endless night? Who sold us the dream and blindfolded our hope? Who are we here? Slaughtered goddesses? Is there nowhere to go? Wasn’t the seed, too, a burial that knew how to return? And the root?
